About West End

West End is an inner southern suburb situated approximately 2.9 km southwest of Brisbane's central business district (CBD). It is geographically bounded by the Brisbane River to the west and south, making it part of a peninsula alongside South Brisbane and Highgate Hill. The suburb is known for its proximity to the city, river breezes, and its location within the City of Brisbane (The Gabba Ward). The area has a rich indigenous history, with the Aboriginal name for the area being Kurilpa, meaning "place of the water rat."

West End boasts a rich heritage, evident in its collection of historic landmarks. Kurilpa Library on Boundary Street serves as a vital local resource, while the Dornoch Terrace Bridge stands as a testament to the area's infrastructure. The West End State School, repurposed from a former cemetery site, remains a cornerstone of education in the community. St Peter's Anglican Church, dating back to 1888, holds a revered place on the Brisbane Heritage Register. Equally significant is the St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, renowned for its architectural beauty. The Commercial Rowing Club, established in 1877, adds to the area's sporting legacy. Davies Park, along with other green spaces, offers serene retreats and hosts the bustling farmer's market every Saturday, making West End a vibrant and cherished neighborhood in Brisbane.

West End enjoys excellent connectivity through various modes of public transport, ensuring convenient access for both residents and visitors. Buses play a key role, with frequent services such as Route 199 BUZ to New Farm-City-West End Ferry, Route 192 to the University of Queensland, and Route 198 Highgate Hill Hail & Ride, providing reliable transportation options. Additionally, the West End ferry wharf on Orleigh Street serves as a hub for CityCat services, offering efficient river transport along the Brisbane River. For those traveling along Montague Road, the City Gliders provide a complimentary bus service, further enhancing accessibility within the neighborhood.
